Summer Vacay thus far

We’ve been super busy thus far this summer!

We’ve attended two weddings:

The Sobey Wedding: (side note: I cried when the groom also presented rings to the bride’s two little girls, symbolizing how he was becoming their father).

The Brooks Wedding:

Gregory flat out refused to dance with me, and instead bopped to the beat by himself in a corner

We had my niece Rachel’s Graduation Party:

As you can see, Jesse and I were WAYYY behind everyone else. Next to us is my brother in law David and my (future?) sister in law, Emily!

AJ was too pooped to party and fell asleep on Aunt Janelle’s lap

Last but not least, we’ve been to the beach twice and plan on going again this Friday!

Right here, you see the difference between my children. Gregory is screaming with joy, and Anthony is howling in terror.

Due to Anthony’s fear of the waves, he and I spent most of the time watching from a safe distance, eating sand

We have many more summer trips planned, including *a trip to LA (next week), * a trip to Sacramento/San Francisco (the following week), * another trip to LA when the Unruhs are in town, * a family trip to north Seattle (possibly), and a * trip out to TX (possibly). Oh, and Big Sur camping! Can’t forget that!

Mother’s Day

This past weekend, we travelled up to Sacramento to visit Caitlin, our someday-to-be adopted daughter. I haven’t really blogged about it, but about 2 months ago, Caitlin left us to stay in a group home for a little while. She is making significant progress, however, and will hopefully return to us soon!

Until then, we are allowed to visit her as much as our schedule can afford. We decided that since every weekend until mid-June is packed, now was the time! We drove the 6 hours up on Saturday morning, only stopping one time for lunch. The boys were amazing– we couldn’t have asked for more. They slept the entire way!

In the afternoon, we picked Caitlin up for snacks at Jamba Juice, then played at the park. After a little while, we went to dinner at Panera Bread, where we ordered something like 30+ servings of mac and cheese πŸ˜‰

All of my kiddos, together :)

After dinner, we dropped Caitlin back at her house, then drove 10 minutes to our hotel. Surprisingly, the boys did quite well sleeping in the same room as us! Gregory got his own queen-sized bed (he was facing a different way each time we checked on him!), and we put Anthony in a pack n play. We have a little trick for making it feel like his own room– tucking it against the wall/ac unit, and pulling the heavy hotel curtain around the sides! Blocks the light and keeps him from seeing us.

Sunday morning, we woke up early, checked out of our hotel, picked up Caitlin, and made it to church in downtown Sacramento (we were even early! Surprises!). Once we were done, we ate lunch at The Habit (such yummy burgers! ILOVEMEAT!!!!), then headed to the Sacramento zoo.

The giraffe came RIGHT up to the fence!

The giraffe came RIGHT up to the fence!

It was about a million degrees hot at the zoo, so although we had lots of water with us, we still headed straight to the nearest Jamba Juice for another “fix”. YUMMM.

After a tearful goodbye with Caitlin (we already miss her soo much!), Jesse and I headed home. We stopped at the Gilroy Outlets (love me some Gap Outlet! Bought some awesome skinny jeans!), and ate a Mother’s Day dinner at Mimi’s Cafe.

We are so exhausted, getting back at 11pm and then heading back into such a busy work week, but we are so glad we did it!

Day of Deals!

This last Saturday, my mom, sister and friend and I spent nearly 7 hours garage sale-ing!

Ironically, this opportunity came after another friend of mine asked if she could go garage sale-ing sometime. She said that my family and I always have great luck. Funny enough, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d gotten a bunch of good deals!

But when it rains, it pours!

Stop #1: We hit 4 garage sales here in Atascadero. One was a super depressing estate sale (all of the lady’s stuff was still set up just as she’d left it! There was even a funeral sign-in sheet by the door!!! wtf?). We didn’t get anything here, and left feeling super creeped out and sad.

But the other three had a lot of great deals!

An antique wooden sign, only $1!

I'm going to repaint this shelf and use it in the bathroom. The 3 mini flower pots were 25 cents total-- perfect for my kitchen window garden!

One house had a giant MOUND of nice boys’ clothes, selling for just 25 cents a piece!!! I got over 26 little boys’ clothes. Here are a few of my favorites.

Stop #2 (post Jamba Juice, of course):

There is a secret, hole-in-the wall place in San Luis Obispo affectionally titled, “The Bin”. In reality, it’s the Goodwill Outlet/Distribution Center. You have to know where to find it (it’s not listed on google maps), and you have to be willing to get down and dirty (some people even wear gloves!)! If you’re curious about one near you, I found this blog about a similar one.

Basically, you have to DIG through bins and bins of clothing that didn’t sell at the Goodwill stores in the area. All that work pays off though– only $2/pound of clothing! I found around 10 items for myself, all name brands– Forever 21, Abercrombie, Ann Taylor Loft, White House Black Market, Banana Republic….all 10 items for less than $5!

Two of my favorite shirts

Garage Sale Deal 9

Super soft Victoria Secret pj pants, Nike running shorts, Abercrombie sweatshirt! All like new!

Stop #3, downtown SLO.

We really meant to just come here for lunch, but as we were parking, we saw yet ANOTHER garage sale! My sister got a brand new Puma athletic bag for $2 and some cool jars for her room. My mom got an entire bag of clothing (there was a lot of Patagonia and Italian leather!) for $5, and all the books were free.

All I got were these like new running shoes-- get ready...25 cents!!! The lady was totally giving away her stuff

Stop #4: NCCS thrift store.

At this point, it was nearly 3pm and we were TIRED. But we decided to run in and see if there was anything.

Of course, this is where I hit the jackpot. Not only did I find a bunch of things we’ve been needing, but since we have $100/year’s worth of teacher’s credit at the store, all of it was FREE!!!!!

3 pairs of nearly new shoes-- Converse, and Old Navy! $2/each

3 pairs of nearly new shoes in G’s current size– Converse, and Old Navy! Would’ve been $2/each

Garage Sale Deals 11

A wicker patio set– would’ve been $22. They came with cushions, but I absolutely HATE the print. I bought some cheery red and blue outdoor fabric to cover them with. More later!

I got these shoes. Funny story-- I had the exact same pair when I lived in Dallas. They were so comfy, I wore them nonstop for almost 2 years. I wore them until there were holes in the soles and I had to throw them out! These were the same ones in my size, so I went ahead and got them, in case I can get another year or two of use from them :) Would've been $2

Not pictured, I also got a brand new full size mattress cover for our guest bed (again, free for me, would’ve been $2).

So….there you have it! Was it worth an entire day’s worth of work? Well, the real point of the day was to spend time with my sister, mom, and friend Susan. We were able to go out to lunch together as well, which would’ve been worth it in and of itself.

All in all, we had so much fun, it would’ve been worth it even if we hadn’t gotten such great deals!

Anthony’s Birthday Party!

Last Saturday, we had a family birthday party for Anthony. We told everybody to bring trucks/cars as presents, since they are his favorite right now! He also got a tree swing (can’t wait to put it up!), a xylophone, a drum, and a few outfits!

It was a beautiful day for a party!

Emily’s Birthday

Even though her “real” birthday isn’t for a few days, we celebrated my sister in law’s birthday today!

After having vegan lasagna at the Cones house (Emily is a hardcore vegan, so even though it’s “Meatfare” Sunday, we obliged πŸ™‚ ), we went to the bowling alley.

Being his first time, Gregory required the help of several of his family in order to bowl “properly”.

After we were done bowling, we went back to our new house for a yummy vegan/fruit cake that my Mother in Law made.

Gregory has this minor obsession with birthdays and candles. I guarantee he’ll be singing Happy Birthday and “blowing out” various objects for the rest of this week.

Living in the New House

We have now been in our new house for 12 days. 12 whole days!! It’s hard to believe how the time has flown.

While the journey it took to get here was miserable (I officially hate house hunting!), it is SOO worth it now. I’ve never known the wonderful feeling of actually owning where we live, and it’s incredible. Jesse feels it too. He’s been Mr. Fixit man around here, installing curtains, our washer and dryer, our BRAND NEW stove (yay!), brackets, shelves, you name it. In fact, he did so much work last Monday that the power drill, fully charged at the beginning of the day, had run out of battery by the evening. And he kept going anyways, doing things by hand. Seriously!

Also, our place looks good. Really good. I’ve been dreaming it up in my head for a long time now, and I was afraid that all of the calculations wouldn’t turn out how I’d envisioned. Nope, it’s all more awesome than I could’ve realized. I’ll post pictures as soon as I get a chance!

We’ve met a few neighbors, and love that we have 10-15 kids living all around us! What a cool neighborhood this is!

Deer in yard

If you can see past the sprinkler stains on the window, you can see our deer family!

And then there’s the wildlife…we are only a TWO MINUTE drive from the largest street and shopping center in our city, a THREE MINUTE drive from the freeway, and only a FIVE minute drive from where we both work, and yet….it feels like we’re out in the middle of nowhere. It’s so quiet, so peaceful, with just woods and trees all around us. Our house is on a little over 1/2 an acre, and we have so many deer and squirrels that come to play in our front yard. Every morning, Gregory eats breakfast while watching the family of deer that comes to rest on our lawn. It’s adorable (also, we will be building a deer fence around some of it so I can have my garden! Stay tuned!).

Basically, we love it here. We couldn’t be more grateful for God handing us this wonderful place after so much searching and heartache.

Cambria Day Trip

Due to our 3 day weekend (teaching holidays=awesomeness!), we decided to head to Cambria for the day. Being only a 30 min. drive away, it really is a shame we don’t go here more often, especially since it’s known as one of the prettiest places in all of CA.

Also, the day could not have been more perfect. 66 degrees and sunny!

First, we went to Moonstone Beach and ate a picnic.

Once we were done eating, we hiked down to the rocks, babies and all!

We finally learned how to use the panoramic function on our iphones. About time!!!

It was low tide, so we were able to walk all over the beach and rocks

Gregory could not stop talking during all of this. He was so thrilled with all the scenery!

After our walk on the beach, we took a small hike/walk into the trees and to another lookout point.

Cambria Trip 19

Again, isn’t this function on the iPhone AWESOME?

After we tired the boys out, we went in search of a hole-in-the-wall cookie bakery that we’d heard rave reviews about. It’s the oddest little place, tucked into a STORAGE facility, of all places, but it was beyond worth it. For $12, we got 8 of the BEST cookies I’ve ever eaten. Seriously. They are already starting to franchise the business after just 2 years because they’ve been so wildly successful!

Didn’t believe me when I said it was in a storage facility?

He said that often, they have so much business that they have to hide their signs! And people still come!

These cookies definitely lived up to their name!

Cambria Trip 5

We also got lemon…oh man, were they good!

Cambria Trip 4

Caitlin could not believe how amazing they were!

All 3 kids fell asleep shortly after we left the bakery, so Jesse and I decided to drive 15 minutes up the coast to the place where he proposed!

I like remembering the day he gave it to me πŸ™‚ Today, I got to tell Caitlin all about it and walk her to the very spot! She claims she wants to have her wedding here someday.

It’s easy to see why people love to come here!

Family Photo Shoot

Since my brother Keith came home from the Navy for the first time in 1.5 years, Jesse’s and my gift to the family for Christmas was a photo shoot with our lovely photographer, Melissa Jean (we’ve used her many times, including for Anthony’s newborn photos, my maternity shoot, my friend’s wedding, Gregory’s first birthday, and Gregory’s baby photos).

In just an hour, we got all sorts of great shots! Here’s the teaser preview she sent me.
