Day of Deals!

This last Saturday, my mom, sister and friend and I spent nearly 7 hours garage sale-ing!

Ironically, this opportunity came after another friend of mine asked if she could go garage sale-ing sometime. She said that my family and I always have great luck. Funny enough, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d gotten a bunch of good deals!

But when it rains, it pours!

<><><><><><><>

Stop #1: We hit 4 garage sales here in Atascadero. One was a super depressing estate sale (all of the lady’s stuff was still set up just as she’d left it! There was even a funeral sign-in sheet by the door!!! wtf?). We didn’t get anything here, and left feeling super creeped out and sad.

But the other three had a lot of great deals!

Stop #2 (post Jamba Juice, of course):

There is a secret, hole-in-the wall place in San Luis Obispo affectionally titled, “The Bin”. In reality, it’s the Goodwill Outlet/Distribution Center. You have to know where to find it (it’s not listed on google maps), and you have to be willing to get down and dirty (some people even wear gloves!)! If you’re curious about one near you, I found this blog about a similar one.

Basically, you have to DIG through bins and bins of clothing that didn’t sell at the Goodwill stores in the area. All that work pays off though– only $2/pound of clothing! I found around 10 items for myself, all name brands– Forever 21, Abercrombie, Ann Taylor Loft, White House Black Market, Banana Republic….all 10 items for less than $5!

Two of my favorite shirts

Super soft Victoria Secret pj pants, Nike running shorts, Abercrombie sweatshirt! All like new!

Stop #3, downtown SLO.

We really meant to just come here for lunch, but as we were parking, we saw yet ANOTHER garage sale! My sister got a brand new Puma athletic bag for $2 and some cool jars for her room. My mom got an entire bag of clothing (there was a lot of Patagonia and Italian leather!) for $5, and all the books were free.

All I got were these like new running shoes-- get ready...25 cents!!! The lady was totally giving away her stuff

Stop #4: NCCS thrift store.

At this point, it was nearly 3pm and we were TIRED. But we decided to run in and see if there was anything.

Of course, this is where I hit the jackpot. Not only did I find a bunch of things we’ve been needing, but since we have $100/year’s worth of teacher’s credit at the store, all of it was FREE!!!!!

3 pairs of nearly new shoes-- Converse, and Old Navy! $2/each

3 pairs of nearly new shoes in G’s current size– Converse, and Old Navy! Would’ve been $2/each

Garage Sale Deals 11

A wicker patio set– would’ve been $22. They came with cushions, but I absolutely HATE the print. I bought some cheery red and blue outdoor fabric to cover them with. More later!

I got these shoes. Funny story-- I had the exact same pair when I lived in Dallas. They were so comfy, I wore them nonstop for almost 2 years. I wore them until there were holes in the soles and I had to throw them out! These were the same ones in my size, so I went ahead and got them, in case I can get another year or two of use from them :) Would've been $2

Not pictured, I also got a brand new full size mattress cover for our guest bed (again, free for me, would’ve been $2).

So….there you have it! Was it worth an entire day’s worth of work? Well, the real point of the day was to spend time with my sister, mom, and friend Susan. We were able to go out to lunch together as well, which would’ve been worth it in and of itself.

All in all, we had so much fun, it would’ve been worth it even if we hadn’t gotten such great deals!

Motherhood

My friend, Robin, wrote this article on her blog and I absolutely LOVE it. I’m always so impressed and touched when a friend of mine is able to put a crucially important concept into words. If you are a mom, stay at home or not, this article will speak to you!

Master Bedroom

I suddenly realized that I haven’t taken any pictures of our master bedroom or bath, which is strange, considering they are two of my favorite parts about the house! I absolutely LOVE sloped ceilings, french doors and balconies. Having all of them in the same room?

M Bedroom 5

Eventually, Jesse will get around to putting up my white gauzy curtains. It’s been on our to-do list for a while though, so no promises

I just can’t get over my view when I wake up in the morning!

I wouldn't show a picture of our closet, except for the fact that this is Anthony's second bedroom ;) He slept here for the first 6 weeks at this house. Even now, whenever he has a rough night and is keeping G awake, we move him here temporarily. Eventually, we will be able to build some shelves or drawers and have a LOT more storage!

And then there is our bathroom. It is the smallest master bathroom we’ve ever had, but I actually love it a ton. It’s super cute, and we’ve actually added a lot of useful under-cabinet storage in order to make it functional. In all honesty, I’d love to have 2 sinks again, like we did in TX, but actually, the lack of vanity space forces me to clean up and put things away. I have been HORRIBLE about this whenever we’ve had a lot of counter space!

Having a clock in the bathroom has been the single best decision of my life.

I love our "his" and "hers" towel hooks. I can't even remember where I bought them in TX. Also, the curtain rod and rings will eventually be bronze to match all the other finishes

I love the decorations here. We used mason jars for toothbrushes. I also made the hanging mason jars for small things like chapstick and cotton balls

Well, that’s it for now!

Anthony’s Birthday Party!

Last Saturday, we had a family birthday party for Anthony. We told everybody to bring trucks/cars as presents, since they are his favorite right now! He also got a tree swing (can’t wait to put it up!), a xylophone, a drum, and a few outfits!

It was a beautiful day for a party!

Cheap Landscaping

I haven’t been feeling well the past week, so I’ve failed to post a few updates!

Since I last posted pictures of the outside of our house, I’ve added a few things to help.

Yard 7

What it looked like a few weeks ago

Yard 6

Just a few daffodils Β and lavender bushes planted

Yard 2

Big bushes are expensive, so I was advised to get small ones and then let them grow for a few years to fill out the space

After a few trips here and there to Home Depot, along with a couple mornings in the sun with Gregory when we felt cooped up, it looks a lot better!

Side Yard 2

What it looks like now! (excuse the afternoon shadow– I was unwilling to wait for the same time of day). There are 2 sunflowers and 6 deer resistant bushes (waxy leaves– they’d have to be super hungry to eat these!

Side Yard 1

Side Yard 3

Gregory pretends that this is a lawnmower.

Side Yard 4

Side Yard 5

Still needs a little more bark near the lavender, but I ran out!

The little shrub bushes were $4-5/each, the bark was $8 total, and the rocks were all free from our backyard! Gregory and I made a game out of it, piling rocks into a flower pot, then carting them over to this side of the house.
The entire thing cost under $50! It’s hard to tell in the pictures, but it really makes this side of the house look cared for. Since it’s the first thing we see every day when we drive up, it’s rather important!

Dove Beauty Sketch

Thanks to my friend Kerrin, I found this video is of a social experiment that Dove conducted. It’s all about how women perceive themselves, and it’s fascinating. I might have cried a little bit. Take 5 minutes to watch it– you’ll be grateful!

Nerdy

Aeneid Latin 1

Today, my students officially decided that I was nerdy. As we were reading aloud the Aeneid in the original Latin, tears welled up in my eyes.

No, seriously. It was that beautiful.

Anthony’s 1 year old!

Exactly 1 year ago, I was in pre-labor with my sweet baby Weester. He is such an incredible joy to us. I never thought that I could love any child as much as I love Gregory, but I was so wrong. This little bundle of joy has been the perfect addition to our family. He is my cuddle bug, and I hope he always loves giving his Momma tons of attention πŸ™‚

We love you, baby Wee!

Commercial

Someone generously donated a 30 second commercial to our school. The commercial will be played during both the morning and evening news, for 5 months!

The problem was….they needed an alumn to be the “face” and “voiceover” for the commercial. And our boss chose me. I mean, when your boss asks you to do something, how can you not, right?

What’s even funnier about all this is that Jesse and I rewrote the script for the commercial just this last Monday night. We didn’t like the lines (some executive wrote them, I think? VERY cheesy), and I definitely didn’t feel comfortable reading them on camera.

As a result, there might be a mention of the “Good, True and Beautiful” in there somewhere πŸ˜‰

Someday, I’ll probably see a clip of it. When I do, I’ll make sure to post it. For now, it’s just me.

Kelly KSBY commercial

My mom took this on my phone in front of our house. You can see why I’ll never be one of those “fashion bloggers”– I just don’t know how to stand!

KSBY commercial Kelly 2

My boss took this of me during the actual shooting of the commercial. Awkward and uncomfortable smiles are kind of my thing…

Outdoors and Garden

Jesse and I have lived in apartments for all 6.5 years of our married life. Unfortunately, living in an apartment with only a small balcony does not exactly prepare you for owning 1/2 acre of undeveloped land!

So, although we’ve been working our butts off, there is still a lot to do. Suggestions are appreciated!

Yard 4

My little seedlings were definitely getting too big and needed a home!

Yard 1

I’m one lucky gal! My father in law and Jesse teamed up and made these for me πŸ™‚ The deer netting is finally up, so I was able to plant! As you can see, however, the second garden bed needs more soil before I can plant my squash and zuchinni

Yard 3

Now that my seedlings are gone, my window garden is back to normal. Up on top, I have the 4 herbs we use the most frequently. I also have my lovely yellow Freesia plant!

I found daffodils at our local grocery discount center for $3 each! A steal, especially since I thought I'd only be able to buy bulbs this late in the season

I also planted some lavender. I was overjoyed to find that both lavender and daffodils are deer resistent (which is good, considering we have a HERD of deer that think they own our yard).

Next, we have some patio furniture! I found adirondack chairs on craigslist for $40. We also have a new table and 4 chairs (although they're not fully painted yet...closeup later).

We also have a new table and 4 chairs that I practically got for free at a garage sale (although they’re not fully painted yet…closeup later). The yellow wrought iron table and chairs will make it Β upstairs onto our master balcony after Anthony’s birthday party

Now for help: I don't know what to do with this area? It's to the right of our main walkway, to the right of my daffodils and lavender. Should I do bushes? Ground cover? Deer resistant flowers? HELP!!

This is the right side of our house as you face it from the front. Eventually this will be the boys' play area, with a picket fence around the perimeter. We have Gregory's (empty) sandbox and his baseball tee so far. Should we add a playground? A water activity table? This area is too shaded to support much of a lawn, so that's out

Down below at the foot of the second set of deck stairs: we have a pretty good idea of what to do here. Jesse wants to build a paver patio with a rock fire pit and more lounge chairs

Then, we have the master balcony. Unless deer have wings, they shouldn't be able to come up here and get my plants :) To the left is where the yellow table and chairs will go, unless I can think of something better?

Yard 11

I decided on climbing jasmine because 1). We had this at one of our apartments in Dallas and it’s easy to grow in pots and 2). Because I love the way it smells! We will probably have our doors open quite often during the summer for a cross breeze, and I want to wake up to the smell of jasmine, yes please!
